Here is a better idea. Instead of band-aiding everything you personally think is bad for you, or worse, letting financially influenceable people in the government think is bad for you (please see how the food pyramid was total baloney, yet it was promoted for decades), with a sin tax, why not just solve the problem?

Stop subsidies. Period. All of them.

What is the real price of sugar? You have no idea at all. No one does. That is because everything from the actual farming of the cane or sugar beet is subsidized, as is every element of the process towards the conversion to table sugar. Subsidized energy, subsidized roads, subsidized contracts with foreign countries (which in turn hurts farmers in poorer countries since they can not compete).

But here you are ignoring why sugar is so cheap and why soda is so cheap. You think that you personally (or someone), should have the the magic scepter of tax imbuement to choose what people should pay more for wether they like it or not. What else would you be doing with than magic tax wand? It’s not your business at all wht I choose to put in my body or how much of it I put in my body. And I dont eat processed sugar, but still, it’s not your business or anyone else’s.

How about we start with getting at the real price of sugar, and less of people thinking that the magic comes from on high.
