It's too bad that the premise here is just plain wrong, and it has nothing to do with wether or not you understand capitalism. I think the problem is that you think "profit" means "money", when it means "power", I'll get to that in second.

When the residents of the Canary islands descended into a dwindling population of rat eaters after utterly consuming every natural resource the island had... was that Capitalism in play? Was is a system of government that laid the groundwork for a capitalist society? Of course not. Same for the Neanderthalls utterly wiping themselves out, was it Capitalism that caused that? You even mention that socialist societies are not really any better at preserving the environoment,so why do you think capitlsim is the key?

It's not. There are two keys: 1) All creatures consume their resources. It's the competition for resources that keep the populations of consumers at bay. If you are human, you participate in the conversion of one resource into something else, destroying that resource. Having more resources available you you, your family, and community bring peace, security.

2) groups of people, nations, communities, desire governance (not necessarily govenment). And the easiest(but most destructive) way to enhance security (food, safety, etc) is through a government.

It is the govenment who picks and chooses what resources are laid waste to. It is the government that removes liablities from psychopaths runnign corporations and within the government itself.

Tons of companies convert natural resources into products that most people do not actually want. i.e. they would not have a product or a market without the existence of a government.

the government destroys price signals that we use as people and businesses to assess the impact of a product on society. The cost embodies everything that goes into the natual resource conversion INCLUDING liability. But when a government gets involved, subsidizing weapons manufactureres, taxing markets while gant tax breaks to other companies, it completely destroys the price signal that everyone uses to detemrine if a product is good or not.

When agovernment builds a road for corporations to run their trucks on, airports to land their planes on, and create a giant military to settle international disputes for corporations, we simply are not talking about capitalism. we are talking about the risk reduction and thecost reduction of destroying the planet.

You want ot fix this? Destroy the governments. remove governance of nations from specific borders on land. Make all governance bodies voluntarily joined.

When I hear you talking about how the government itself is the issue, not just the parties, or the players, then I will beleive you are understanding how this will get fixed. Keep pointing the finger at capitalism, particularly conflating it with crony capitalism, and you are just another screaming head on the internet.
