“Today’s great dying is happening faster than ever before, and its causes are clear: breakneck development, fossil-fueled global warming, industrial pollution, single-crop agriculture.”
True.
“scientists are calling for an end to capitalism”
Untrue….YOU are calling for this. Nowhere on the planet is there a free market system, so what exactly would you be ending? Some places approximate it closer than others, but Capitalism is just a word people use when they mean “Not Socialism” or when they want to conflate bad things together into one word.
“ the scientific community is now asking us to completely rethink modern society. Not because they’re ideological, but because they’re scientists. They go where the evidence leads.”
True.
“but capitalism introduces a totally different set of incentives: Once plant and animal life is viewed as a production input, a cash engine, or an acceptable casualty of profit accumulation, it makes sense to wring revenue from life until it’s gone, especially when competitive pressures reward making a quick buck.”
Untrue. This is not capitalism. In capitalism, without subsidy or publicizing risk, the prices of more and rarer resources would go up, supply goes down. Damages incurred by providing the goods or services would be privatized and not put on a public burden. Zero of these things happen now.
So how do we make these drastic changes? Shouldn’t we look at which organizations pollute the most? How about which organizations cause the most conflict on the planet thus wasting resources and adding pollution? Shouldn’t we look at which organizations are protecting those who pollute the planet, through legitimization, subsidization and risk avoidance?
Which are these organizations? Government, government and government.
How did public transport get siderailed in America…yup, you got it lobbyists influenced government to lower the barriers to market entry for them, subsidize oil explorations and research, make a federal highways system. The very concept of a corporation doesn't exist outside of a government definition. What does it do? it removes risk from the leaders of those corporations.
I can give endless examples of how the government makes all the problems you come up with worse. Each time you will find the government making it worse by subsidizing, removing costs, removing liability. Then on top of that, the governments take on interventionist policies, cause conflict all over the world.
The issue is NOT that capitalism is ruining the world, it’s that government ruins capitalism and the parasitic relationship is ruining the world.
But I’m guessing you think more government is the answer….
UPDATE:
If there was any further proof that government is the problem and not capitalism, this just came out. We can solve global warming and pollution tomorrow. End government.
If your next question is “but who would build the roads?” You are on the right track.
